CHAPTER SIX

“By now, that art dealer is either on his way home after making his delivery or dead in the dirt along a side road out here,” Garik muttered grimly as he stared out at the waves from the edge of the hotel room patio. Behind him, Rachel was collecting herself and silently pouting the way she did whenever he managed to call her on her reluctant but irresistible attraction to him. A shuddering orgasm while he sucked her plump little clit qualified, definitely.

The thought made his heavy, engorged balls ache, and Garik gritted his teeth. He still tasted her, still wanted her. And he was still raging, fucking hard inside his jeans. It went against his blood not to take Rachel for his, even against her will. If it hadn’t been for those years with Elias and the Central Coast Pack, all that time thinking he was a latent Odin Wolf and training for the moment he’d first turn…. Well, some things about those two years with Elias just stuck, he guessed. If he wasn’t Odin Wolf in blood, he had gained a little bit of it through sheer discipline.

After a moment, Rachel stiffened and grew still; he heard it in the way she moved as she abruptly stood and came up behind him.

“You know what it is, don’t you?” she asked. “You know what Poulsen was supposed to deliver. Tell me.”

A feeling like a lead weight formed in the bottom of Garik’s gut as he recalled the dustup with his pack brothers earlier in the parking lot at the Goldstone Beach Grill. “Dainsleif.” Garik heard Rachel’s breath catch, and he turned to find her staring into space to recall where she’d heard the name. “It’s a legendary sword straight out of Norse mythology—or, as you and I know well, history. Maybe Poulsen managed to lay his hands on it or only shards of it, but either way…. Mick wants it. He intends to use it to put an end to my challenge to his place as alpha with the Sons.”

Rachel squinted. “How is a sword going to help?”

“Dainsleif is the sword that must draw blood—that always draws blood—once it leaves the sheath. It doesn’t miss. And no wound from that blade ever heals.”

And with that, Rachel’s eyes flared. She knew as well as Garik did that one of the major difficulties in killing a shifter was that it never worked by degrees. Shifters didn’t bleed out or die of infection, because their healing rate was phenomenal. Killing one required a fatal blow, and nothing short of it. Take away a shifter’s accelerated healing….

“No wonder Elias and Ron don’t want it in the hands of either the Agency or one of the Fenris packs,” Rachel said, breathing out hard, ruffling those sweet bangs of hers. “I’ve got to finish this assignment and get that weapon back to Elias.”

“No,” Garik insisted as she turned to open the sliding glass door to the hotel room.

“What do you mean no?”

“Rachel, I just told you I’m on the brink of war with my pack alpha.
